Beers on the Boards--For Real?

My Beer Buddy Chris DePeppe runs a great annual event every March down in Point Pleasant at Martell's Tiki Bar called "Beers on the Boards." Chris gets some great breweries to bring their greatest beers and pairs them up with an incredible buffet, the equal of which I have never seen at any beer festival.

You can get--and enjoy--beers out on Martell's Patio (if the weather permits), and it's a wonderful event.

But, even if you look like Chumlee, not so wonderful that you can carry your beer out of Martell's and walk down the Point Pleasant Boardwalk with it--unless you want a quick trip to the hoosegow and/or a fine. And that's not only the rule in Point Pleasant; it applies to all Jersey's shore boardwalks, including Belmar, Long Branch, Seaside Heights and Wildwood.

If, however, you're walking the boards in Atlantic City this summer, there's a chance you will see someone carrying an open beer--or you may be able to carry one yourself.

Is this a good, desirable thing or not? AC, of course, is undergoing some financial pains, so anything to attract more people to the resort is probably seen as a benefit. But I don't know how many shore visitors are going to head for AC just because you can walk the boards with a brew, either. Still, who knows how the idea will play?

But we should be thankful that this idea didn't come to fruition when Snookie, Pauly D, Sammy, Ronnie and The Situation were doing their thing in Seaside a couple of years ago. They got in fights just carrying around Kohr's Frozen Custard.

Can you imagine the mayhem if they were sucking down some Weyerbacher's Merry Monks, some North Coast Pranqster, some Evil Twin Molotov Cocktail or some Stone Double Bastard? And God forbid they got a hold of some Founders Devil Dancer, A Flying Dog Double Dog or a Dogfish Head Palo Santo Marron. We'd have to call out the National Guard, not just the Seaside cops.

And don't dare mention Snake Venom.
